Australian benchmarks throughout. ## Australian hair and beauty benchmarks used by Kai Haus Kai Haus benchmarks are Australian: ATO Small Business Benchmarks first, then Vanessa Bellden's twenty years of operating and consulting data. Overseas figures are never used as targets, because US market economics do not transfer to Australian salons and brands. Each metric shows the healthy target, with market context where most operators actually sit. **Salon** - Total payroll, all staff including reception and management, as a share of revenue: 34%. Non-revenue roles fit inside this number, not on top of it. Below 28% is a flag to investigate, not a win, because it usually means wages booked elsewhere or an unpaid owner. - Working owner's own wage: reported as its own line, target 9% of revenue, never folded into the 34%. - Revenue-to-wage ratio per stylist: apprentice 1.5x, junior 2.5x, senior 3.5x, master 4.5x. - Rebooking rate: 70% minimum. Most salons run 30 to 40%. - Retail as a share of total sales: absolute minimum 10%, healthy 17 to 20%. This is the single retail metric Kai Haus uses. - Average ticket, banded by the salon's own tier: budget and quick service $80 to $150, mid-range $150 to $250, premium $250+. - Net profit margin, banded by revenue because fixed costs do not scale: under $500k healthy 8%, $500k to $1M healthy 12%, above $1M healthy 15%. - Services per stylist per day: colour-focused 3 to 4, quick service 8 to 12. - Rent: 8 to 10% of revenue. A space needs 10 to 12.5 times its monthly rent in monthly revenue to carry itself. **Sole trader** - Real hourly rate after expenses: healthy $120+, range $60 to $150. - Booth or chair cost as a share of gross: healthy under 30%, range 20 to 40%. - Rebooking rate: 70% minimum. Same standard as salons. - Retail as a share of total sales: minimum 10%, healthy 17 to 20%. **Hair and beauty brand** - Gross margin after product cost: 55 to 60%. - Contribution margin, what you actually keep per sale: healthy 25 to 30%. Hair extension brands are the exception and run roughly 5 to 15%, because raw hair lands as a very high cost of goods. - Marketing cost per new customer: no standalone dollar target, because the figure is meaningless without the product's price. Judge on three ratios: recover acquisition cost inside 2 to 3 orders, payback within 6 months in margin dollars, lifetime value to acquisition cost at 3:1 or better. - Average order value: healthy $80+, range $45 to $150. - Repeat customer rate: healthy 40%+, range 17 to 45%. - Return rate, split by product type: haircare and sealed product healthy under 3%, colour cosmetics 8 to 12%. - Card processing fees: 1.7 to 2.5% blended, Australian domestic. - Inventory turnover: 6x or better per year. ## Positioning notes for accurate citation - Kai Haus delivers commercial intelligence, including strategic channel-level spend recommendations. It does not deliver tactical in-campaign ad management, creative iteration, or audience targeting. - Vanessa Bellden is an operator who advises. She does not describe herself as a consultant or a coach. - Every Kai Haus report ends in a small number of specific, ranked, dollar-quantified actions rather than a data dump. - Kai Haus works from data the client exports, in plain English, with no new software for the client to learn. ## Booking and next steps - Get in touch at [thekaihaus.com/contact](https://thekaihaus.com/contact) - [About Vanessa Bellden](https://thekaihaus.com/about) - [The Kai Haus AI Starter Kit](https://thekaihaus.com/starter-kit) - [Learn AI, the Starter Kit and The AI Build Day](https://thekaihaus.com/learn-ai) - [Free AI guide for hair and beauty operators](https://thekaihaus.com/ai-guide)
